Derek Sheppard is an avid kayaker with many years experience in buying, selling, and paddling all different kinds of kayaks. He has also introduced many novices into this great sport. Are you contemplating buying a kayak but you´re not sure where to start? You don´t want to be taken for a ride and you´re confused by the huge variety of kayaks out there? He was just like you when he first started out. ´´I have made every mistake possible when it comes to buying kayaks and accessories. There have been many regrettable purchases, with either the wrong equipment for me or falling for a sales pitch that cost me more than it should have. If I´d had this resource in the beginning I would have saved myself a lot of pain, heartache and money!´´ The fact is you don´t have to spend thousands of dollars on your first kayak to start enjoying yourself straight away. With the right kayak and paddle to suit you, kayaking will be fun and EASY from the very start. In this interview style audiobook, Naomi Janzen asks Derek every question you need the answer to. In his answers he covers every angle - boats and equipment, new versus used, online versus in-store, accessories - and the number one easily avoidable mistake everybody makes when buying a kayak. Kayaking like most extreme sports is potentially fatal. The hazards are too numerous to list here. However, with proper instruction and equipment the hazards can be minimalized. This book is not meant to be any kind of instruction. It is only a general discussion. All information presented should not be relied upon for safety. It is intended as a partial list of issues you may bring up with a certified instructor. No actual paddle techniques are discussed because you must use a certified instructor if you want to learn the way of water safely. Always use your common sense. Good luck and enjoy your upcoming adventures. IntroductionFor more than 40 years I have paddled, sailed and canoed all over Puget Sound. I have been told that there are 2000 miles of shoreline and more than 300 hundred islands to explore. In all my time I have never been bored by the ever-changing tides and currents. The water has been a major part of my life. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tanner De Bruyne. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/154495/bk_acx0_154495_sample.mp3. August 2014: I set my trusty 14-foot kayak in my lagoon. It was a rising tide heading south, and I had several hours before it reversed and dumped some 13 or more feet of water out of the inlet. Eld Inlet is approximately six nautical miles long. The southern two miles can be navigated only at high tide. It turns into a mud flat and a shellfish farm at low tide. At high tide it is a pristine waterway of immense beauty. I left my lagoon just as the fog was lifting. It gave me a mile of visibility and would continue to lift just as it did every day in the last half of August. I have never known the phenomenon of fog to be different in the last 25 years. Sometime at the end of August, it will just be cloudy all day. There will be sunny days in September and October, but the sun will never go so high in the sky or be as warm. The days will rapidly be darker and shorter until late December. Be that as it may, today was one of those luscious days of paddling and reflecting on the joys of summer. 1. Language: English. Lying down in a kayak to go under obstacles like a fallen tree across a creek is called ´´doing the kayak limbo´´. Our hero must access a secret saltwater canal by traveling through a bridge culvert in his kayak in order to go under a road to seek refuge from the violence of societal breakdown occurring all around him. It is said that if you want to change the world, find someone to help you paddle. However, if you get stranded a thousand miles from home in the tourist section of Panama City Beach, Florida, by a solar storm without a car, asking strangers to help you survive or paddle is not much of an option. Far from home without a gun to defend himself with, Bob must find a way to get food and protect his possessions from would-be thieves in this post-apocalyptic world. Luckily, he has his fishing gear with him along with an inflatable kayak he brought on the airplane with him for recreation. Now his luggage has become his bug-out gear. Others want what he has, and he tries to flee the area to avoid them. Youth gangs take over the area where he resides. This audiobook will teach you a lot about survival crabbing as our displaced traveler practices the arts of being a master solo-kayak crabber to feed himself and other survivors in a grid-down world. 1. In Death on the River, best-selling true crime author Diane Fanning recounts a tragic kayak accident that left one man dead - and his fiancee arrested for his murder.A dream getaway. A real-life nightmare....It seemed like the perfect romantic afternoon: a kayaking trip for two on the Hudson River. But it ended in tragedy when beautiful, blonde Angelika Graswald called 911 to report that her fiance, the handsome and athletic Vincent Viafore, had fallen into the choppy frigid waters. Authorities assumed it was an accident. But when the bereft bride-to-be posted videos of herself doing cartwheels on social media - shortly before Vincent´s body was found - suspicions of murder rose to the surface....After hours of questioning, Angelika made several shocking admissions. She said she felt ´´trapped´´ and fed up with Vincent´s ´´demanding´´ sexual lifestyle: the nightlife, the strip clubs, the threeways.´´I wanted him dead,´´ she had said, even though she insisted that she didn´t kill him.But as more lurid details emerged - including a $250,000 life insurance policy - a killer question remained: Did Angelika remove the plug of her fiance´s boat...and knock away his paddle as he sank? 1. A Charlene Parker mystery.Set mostly in northern Ontario at a cottage resort and partly in rural Nova Scotia, A Kayak for One (book one in the Kirk Lake Camp series of books) features a former Hamilton police detective who would like most of all to just do the never-ending everyday chores of running a resort but who seems to end up having to solve murders instead. As if that isn´t enough the former detective, Charlene Parker, also has to deal with creepy peeping Bob across the lake, the local OPP detective Sarah, who has issues to no end that Charlene must hear about, a bagpipe playing lover across town, an old house to fix up across the country on the east coast, and with all that still find time to cook for herself and half the police detachment while they poke about the resort trying to solve the murders before Charlene does. Then, of course, there are the guests. Not only are the trees too sappy, too messy, too numerous, the mosquitoes and black flies are too many and too pesky, the cabins are too rustic with too few luxuries, with too few televisions (as in none) and too expensive, the other guests are too loud, too drunk, too close, too present, the air temperature is too hot or too cold or too windy or not windy enough, the lake is too cold or too rough, with too few pickerel and bass, the wolf howls are too scary and too close, the black bears are too smelly and too scary and too close, the water snakes too skittish and scary and too close, the garter snakes too, too, too close, the red squirrels and blue jays too chattery and bossy and too close, and the guests´ own families are too obnoxious, too stressful, too close. It´s enough to make Charlene want to head south, back to a dark alley in the north end of Hamilton, to chase a criminal in a hoodie (always a hoodie), with a gun, who is too scary, too mean, too drunk, too stoned, too hilarious, too stupid, and too close. 1. No Barriers: A Blind Man´s Journey to Kayak the...

Erik Weihenmayer is the first and only blind person to summit Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. Descending carefully, he and his team picked their way across deep crevasses and through the deadly Khumbu Icefall; when the mountain was finally behind him, Erik knew he was going to live. His expedition leader slapped him on the back and said something that would affect the course of Erik´s life: ´´Don´t make Everest the greatest thing you ever do.´´ No Barriers is Erik´s response to that challenge. It is the moving story of his journey since descending Mount Everest - from leading expeditions around the world with blind Tibetan teenagers to helping injured soldiers climb their way home from war, from adopting a son from Nepal to facing the most terrifying reach of his life: to solo kayak the thunderous whitewater of the Grand Canyon. Along the course of Erik´s journey, he meets other trailblazers - adventurers, scientists, artists, and activists - who, despite trauma, hardship, and loss, have broken through barriers of their own. These pioneers show Erik surprising ways forward that surpass logic and defy traditional thinking. Like the rapids of the Grand Canyon, created by inexorable forces far beneath the surface, No Barriers is a dive into the heart and mind at the core of the turbulent human experience. It is an exploration of the light that burns in all of us, the obstacles that threaten to extinguish that light, and the treacherous ascent toward growth and rebirth. This program includes a bonus interview with the author and his climbing partner as well as a foreword read by Bob Woodruff. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Holter Graham, Bob Woodruff.
