In Death on the River, best-selling true crime author Diane Fanning recounts a tragic kayak accident that left one man dead - and his fiancee arrested for his murder.A dream getaway. A real-life nightmare....It seemed like the perfect romantic afternoon: a kayaking trip for two on the Hudson River. But it ended in tragedy when beautiful, blonde Angelika Graswald called 911 to report that her fiance, the handsome and athletic Vincent Viafore, had fallen into the choppy frigid waters. Authorities assumed it was an accident. But when the bereft bride-to-be posted videos of herself doing cartwheels on social media - shortly before Vincent´s body was found - suspicions of murder rose to the surface....After hours of questioning, Angelika made several shocking admissions. She said she felt ´´trapped´´ and fed up with Vincent´s ´´demanding´´ sexual lifestyle: the nightlife, the strip clubs, the threeways.´´I wanted him dead,´´ she had said, even though she insisted that she didn´t kill him.But as more lurid details emerged - including a $250,000 life insurance policy - a killer question remained: Did Angelika remove the plug of her fiance´s boat...and knock away his paddle as he sank? 1. August 2014: I set my trusty 14-foot kayak in my lagoon. It was a rising tide heading south, and I had several hours before it reversed and dumped some 13 or more feet of water out of the inlet. Eld Inlet is approximately six nautical miles long. The southern two miles can be navigated only at high tide. It turns into a mud flat and a shellfish farm at low tide. At high tide it is a pristine waterway of immense beauty. I left my lagoon just as the fog was lifting. It gave me a mile of visibility and would continue to lift just as it did every day in the last half of August. I have never known the phenomenon of fog to be different in the last 25 years. Sometime at the end of August, it will just be cloudy all day. There will be sunny days in September and October, but the sun will never go so high in the sky or be as warm. The days will rapidly be darker and shorter until late December. Be that as it may, today was one of those luscious days of paddling and reflecting on the joys of summer. 1. Language: English. Wild Thing: The Complete First Season, Hörbuch,...

This is the complete, ad-free first season of Wild Thing.Sasquatch. Bigfoot. A dark shape running through the trees, a bit of fur caught on a twig, the rustling in the forest. Its legend extends back to precolonial times, but still captures modern imaginations. Companies market Bigfoot-themed goods: beer, television shows, bikes, coffee, socks... erotica. People slap ´´I believe” bumper stickers on their cars and kayaks and binge-watch Bigfoot-themed reality shows. Part of this is tongue-in-cheek - Bigfoot as hipster accessory. But many people take Sasquatch seriously. Very seriously. Primatologists, naturalists, academics - perfectly rational and evidence-driven people who swear to his existence and know he (she? it?) is real. Veteran public radio producer Laura Krantz has met them. Wild Thing is Laura’s journey into the world of Bigfoot, introducing us to the true believers and the I-want-to-believers, while seeking to explore why this creature ignites our imaginations, where that fascination comes from, and why it persists. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Laura Krantz. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/141380/bk_acx0_141380_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

Sh*tshow!: The Country´s Collapsing . . . and t...

A daring, firsthand, and utterly-unscripted account of crisis in America, from Ferguson to Flint to Cliven Bundy´s ranch to Donald Trump´s unstoppable campaign for President--at every turn, Pulitzer-prize winner and bestselling author of Detroit: An American Autopsy, Charlie LeDuff was there In the Fall of 2013, long before any sane person had seriously considered the possibility of a Trump presidency, Charlie LeDuff sat in the office of then-Fox News CEO Roger Ailes, and made a simple but prophetic claim: The whole country is bankrupt and on high boil. It´s a shitshow out there. No one in the bubbles of Washington, DC., New York, or Los Angles was talking about it--least of all the media. LeDuff wanted to go to the heart of the country to report what was really going on. Ailes baulked. Could the hard-living and straight-shooting LeDuff be controlled? But, then, perhaps on a whim, he agreed. And so LeDuff set out to record a TV series called, ´´The Americans,´´ and, along the way, ended up bearing witness to the ever-quickening unraveling of The American Dream. For three years, LeDuff travelled the width and breadth of the country with his team of production irregulars, ending up on the Mexican border crossing the Rio Grande on a yellow rubber kayak alongside undocumented immigrants; in the middle of Ferguson as the city burned; and watching the children of Flint get sick from undrinkable water. Racial, political, social, and economic tensions were escalating by the day. The inexorable effects of technological change and globalization were being felt more and more acutely, at the same time as wages stagnated and the price of housing, education, and healthcare went through the roof. The American people felt defeated and abandoned by their politicians, and those politicians seemed incapable of rising to the occasion. The old way of life was slipping away, replaced only by social media, part-time work, and opioid addiction. Sh*tshow! is that true, tragic, and distinctively American story, told from the parts of the country hurting the most. A soul-baring, irreverent, and iconoclastic writer, LeDuff speaks the language of everyday Americans, and is unafraid of getting his hands dirty. He scrambles the tired-old political, social, and racial categories, taking no sides--or prisoners. Old-school, gonzo-style reporting, this is both a necessary confrontation with the darkest parts of the American psyche and a desperately-needed reminder of the country´s best instincts.
